August 2002
Dear Water System Customer:
Starting approximately September 1, 2002, Lakeway Municipal Utility District (District) Water Treatment Facility will be converting from Free Chlorine Disinfection to Total Chloramine Disinfection. This will help us to meet new regulations instituted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission (TNRCC).
The TNRCC requires the District to publicize the use of chloramines and to emphasize that dialysis patients may be seriously affected if carbon filters are not employed to prepare water for the “dialysate”.
In addition, businesses and residents with fish tanks may need to provide additional treatment prior to using water disinfected by chloramines. Total chloramine is much more persistent and longer lasting than free chlorine. The practice of letting aquarium water age for two weeks before introducing fish may not allow sufficient time for the chloramines to dissipate and may harm fish. Consult your aquarium dealer for the proper procedures in treating aquarium water.
A slight taste and odor change may take place during the first weeks of implementation of this disinfection change. During this time, District personnel will be flushing the system using fire hydrants.
Thank you for your patience while we strive to comply with new regulations. If you have any questions regarding this change, please call the District Office at 512/261-6222 during normal business hours.
Sincerely,
Richard W. Eason
General Manager
