Wastewater Back-up Relief Valve Installation Guide

There are only a few considerations when installing a relief valve.  The District will inspect the final installation and require correction if these instructions are not followed, so please follow them carefully.  The most common location for installing the relief valve is in the top of the cleanout just outside your home.  Simply remove and discard the threaded plug from your cleanout and screw in the relief valve.  That’s it.

The following items are very important.  Make sure that the relief valve location is:

1.    Below the slab elevation of your lowest floor

2.    At least six inches above the soil

3.    Not in an area which can be flooded

This installation shows two cleanouts; one near the home and one near the street.  The preferred location is near the home.

In some cases, there will be no threaded plug as the cleanout cover.  If so, your plumber will have to obtain the proper parts to fit the new relief valve.  In other cases, there will be no cleanout adjacent to your home.  If so, it is possible that there is one near the street.  This location will work if the relief valve elevation is below your floor.  If the cleanout at the street is above the elevation of the floor of your home, this location will not work.  In this case, or if you cannot find a cleanout at all, you may have to enlist a plumber to help you locate the service line near your home and dig it up.  He could then install a tee and fittings in the service line, which will accommodate the relief valve.

Contact a plumber if you do not have a cleanout or if your cleanout is above the floor level of your home.

After you receive the relief valve, you have thirty days to install it.  Call the District Office when your installation is complete, at 261-6222, ext 10.  The District inspector will then check your relief valve.  We must insure that your installation will be effective for preventing backups and that no rainwater run-off can enter the wastewater collection system through the relief valve.  We will require correction if these steps are not followed.  If these steps are not followed properly, the District will notify you of non-compliance stating possible termination of water services until your installation is correct.

Thank you for your cooperation.  We hope that this relief valve can prevent a disaster at your home!
